A: The fabric! Our children's garments are made with fabrics made of a unique blend of 100% natural cotton with up-cycled denim (pre-consumer denim waste). This waste is ground back into fiber, spun into new yarns and woven or knitted into new sustainable and exclusive fabrics. Our up-cycled fabrics are free of chemicals and dyes; we manage to save 20,000 liters of water per kilogram of up-cycled material. We believe that beautiful and premium quality textiles should not cost the earth!
Our children's shoes are also handcrafted with high quality leather. We offer a limited selection as we try to find only the best for your children. Our baby blankets are sewn by our seamstresses with much care, and the crochet edgings are all handcrafted too by women in Guatemala who love to crochet.
A: Yes! We have developed a program to teach women in Guatemala how to crochet. Cony Larsen, one of our founders who is also the author of many crochet books, has taught women in Guatemala how to crochet and to refine their crochet skills with new techniques straight from her books. Teaching our group of women how to crochet has allowed them to earn money for their families while staying at home with their children.
A: We do! As much as we value our eco-friendly fabrics, we take much pride and satisfaction to let you know who makes your children's clothes. We believe that it is our responsibility to ensure fair trade and wages for our employees and vendors. When you purchase our fabrics, accessories and garments, you are providing sustainable jobs and fair trade. Our sewing shop is not a sweatshop!
A: When something is up-cycled, it means that discarded objects or materials are reused to create a new product that is either of higher quality or value than the original. Of the 13.1 million tons of textiles thrown out each year, only 15% of them are recovered for recycling purposes. The average t-shirt wastes about 2,600 liters of water during the manufacturing process. How we manufacture our products saves 20,000 liters of water for every kilogram of cotton produced by up-cycling. Up-cycling fabrics is essential to minimizing environmental impacts, decreasing the amount of waste that goes into landfills, eliminating the use of chemicals and significantly reducing water usage. It is an opportunity to take "trash" and turn it into something beautiful!
We recommend you use The Frye Company Shoe Polish to condition and wear-proof our lovely boots (follow the Frye instructions to polish boots).
1. Brush dust off with a horsehair brush or with a clean towel.
2. Cover the entire shoe with a generous amount of polish using your shoe polish brush, or with a clean towel.
3. Brush the entire shoe vigorously; wipe excess polish with a dry clean cloth.
A: Recycling is the practice that takes an item and targets it for reuse, returning it back to the cycle of daily contribution to society rather than discarding it to trash. Up-cycling is the process of returning new waste materials back to a pliable, usable form without degradation to their latent value - moving resources back up the supply chain. Up-cycling also reduces the need for new virgin material to be harvested as feedstock for new generations of product. In the case of plastic, this means less oil wells drilled. For metals, less mountains mined. For paper, less trees felled. For fibers, less water usage. All around this means less expended energy. Up-cycling represents a truly cyclical, balanced process that all industries and companies should be aiming towards. At this point, just having the aim would be another important step. All of our products could be drastically changed if the beginning of their design started with the goal of not having them end up in a landfill.
A: Mikoleon LLC was founded June of 2015. We are a small, new company and are not a certified fair trade company yet. However, we take pride in paying fair prices for our materials and excellent benefits and wages in both the USA and Guatemala.
A: Absolutely! We have two types of groups we work with: Our fabric manufacturer is 100% compliant to Guatemala's local laws and regulations; with zero tolerance policy towards child labor, forced labor, discrimination, harassment and abuse. Our manufacturer's employees also have an unconditionally healthy and secure work environment, as well as freedom of association and fair labor practices. They work with a workers union which deals directly with the Administration Department, together reaching agreements which offer a favorable environment for all. The second group we work with are our in house employees. Our in house employees have all the benefits the law in Guatemala requires such as medical, social security, maternity leave and vacation benefits. In addition, we provide them with personal scholarships, micro loans for educations purposed and software training. This allows them to be better prepared to perform their jobs.
